What are Dees?

The Cyclotron. A cyclotron consists of two D-shaped regions known as dees. In each dee there is a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the page. In the gap separating the dees there is a uniform electric field pointing from one dee to the other.

Considering this, what is a synchrotron and what is it used for?

A synchrotron is a large machine (about the size of a football field) that accelerates electrons to almost the speed of light. As the electrons are deflected through magnetic fields they create extremely bright light. The light is channelled down beamlines to experimental workstations where it is used for research.

What is a cyclotron and how does it work?

Cyclotron uses electrical power to accelerate charged particles in the spiral path. This collision of particles results in creation of radioactive isotopes which are further used in the field of medicine, industry and scientific research. They are even used in particle therapy to treat cancer.

How does a synchrotron works?

A Synchrotron accelerates charged particles, such as electrons into an orbit at almost the speed of light. When electrons are deflected through magnetic fields they create extremely bright light, million times brighter than sunlight.
